Typically,
the color of the polyester or cotton binding tape blends seamlessly with the
rug's color. Likewise, a serged edge is usually a complementary shade. Serging
is another edging method used to turn a carpet remnant into an area rug. Yarn
is sewn to the edges in a manner that is similar to overlock stitching. While
serging looks like it is done by hand, the task is completed on a heavy-duty
machine. Fringing can also be attached to a rug for a more luxurious look.
Often, the fringe can be removed and replaced if it becomes worn.
