Carpet binding turns remnants into rugs

Binding tape is sewn around a carpet remnant's rough edges to turn it into an area rug. This binding keeps the carpet from unraveling. It's wise to use leftover carpet to create custom area rugs. If you haven't recently upgraded the wall-to-wall carpeting in your home, you can purchase a carpet remnant. Use your new rug to cover and protect carpeting inside a doorway or other well-used spot or place it on hard surface flooring. Good's Floor Store is a carpet store in Decatur, Illinois, that offers an in-house carpet binding service. We are Decatur's oldest family-owned and operated floor covering store.

Carpet binding basics

Before any binding is done, a carpet remnant is cut to the desired shape and size. Runners and inside or outside mats are popular alternatives to area rugs. The binding tape, which is available in different widths, is sewn onto the carpet with a binding machine. This machine looks similar to a commercial sewing machine. Perhaps you are tempted to try a DIY method of binding rather than a professional method. Keep in mind that machine binding is more durable than glue or staples. Undoubtedly, the machine method is quicker and likely; the cost is similar.

Edging the rug

Typically, the color of the polyester or cotton binding tape blends seamlessly with the rug's color. Likewise, a serged edge is usually a complementary shade. Serging is another edging method used to turn a carpet remnant into an area rug. Yarn is sewn to the edges in a manner that is similar to overlock stitching. While serging looks like it is done by hand, the task is completed on a heavy-duty machine. Fringing can also be attached to a rug for a more luxurious look. Often, the fringe can be removed and replaced if it becomes worn.
